Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to reminisce about Rickie Lambert, after a tweet emerged displaying highlights from his time at St Mary’s.
The tweet showed a number of the former beetroot factory worker’s finishes for Southampton, including dominant back-post headers, thumping first-time finishes and fiercely struck spot-kicks.
In total, the now-retired 37-year-old netted 115 goals in 230 appearances for the Saints, helping them to the Premier League during his stay at St Mary’s while also making 11 appearances for England, scoring three goals and amazingly earning a spot on the plane as part of Roy Hodgson’s World Cup squad in 2014.
Lambert scored 31 goals and amassed 18 assists in 120 Premier League appearances, and is clearly still held in high regards by Southampton supporters if the few reactions below are anything to go by.
Let’s see what they’ve been saying about their former No.7…
To kick off the reaction, Steve Barrett called Lambert an “absolute legend” and also added that Southampton would “not be where they are today” without the Kirkby-born striker’s “goalscoring masterclasses” – it’s hard to argue against that point.
Myles Bowman echoed Steve’s point by calling the Englishman an “absolute legend” as well.
Elsewhere, Rob and Luke reminisced about the memories Lambert gave them.
Rob said that some of his “fondest memories” of Southampton in the lower leagues were because of the former Liverpool striker.
Luke then added that the former marksman gave him “so many great memories” before stating that he would “love” to see just one more strike from the “goal machine” – wouldn’t we all.
Lastly, these two supporters also recalled pleasing memories of Lambert.
Who is that?! Nobody has been able to name the teams all of these obscure managers were once in charge of…
Jem said that he “genuinely scored goals for fun” before Marshall made the bold claim that the ex-England international was the “best player I’ve ever witnessed play growing up” – how’s that for a compliment?
