After scoring just once in their last three games, one of which was against Fulham’s leaky defence, the need for goals at Newcastle is apparent but they already have a quality striker in Salomon Rondon, should he get the good service he needs – the Tyneside outfit should swoop for out-of-favour Leicester midfielder Adrien Silva to provide both.
What’s the word?
Well, The Mirror has reported that Mike Ashley’s takeover negotiations with Peter Kenyon is on the verge of collapse and that Mags boss Rafa Benitez is currently on tenterhooks waiting for an indication as to what, if any, funds he will allocated going into the January transfer window.
Newcastle fans have been hoping that the controversial Ashley could get a deal over the line otherwise his tight-pocketed approach to backing the club would most likely continue – if so, the St James’ Park outfit could be relegated, especially if the teams around them strengthen.
On the presumption that Ashley cannot rid himself of the club he so clearly doesn’t want to be in ownership of anymore, Benitez will surely be forced to operate in a very limited section of the market where he will be hard pushed to find players of suitable quality for cut-price fees – Silva ticks both boxes.
Silky Silva
The Portuguese joined the Foxes in the summer, despite having his first medical with the club and submitting a deal sheet in January, as the latter of which was received (fractionally) past the deadline – his struggle in moving to the Premier League hasn’t been worthwhile so far, as he slips down the pecking order under Claude Puel.
The former Southampton boss has afforded Silva just five appearances in all competitions this season and A Bola has reported that he wants a return to Sporting, his former club, in January.
Benitez must convince the 29-year-old to remain in England as he can be a danger if allowed to shoot from distance and has a passing range that would only be matched by Jonjo Shelvey at St James’ Park.
Not afraid to stick a foot in, either, the midfielder is a jack of all trades but has lost his place to Papy Mendy and Hamza Choudhury before he even managed to make it his own – it would be a shame for that talent to be wasted and Benitez could be just the man to reinvigorate the 26-cap international.
