Di Maria has long been linked with a move back to where it all began for him, but he opted to prolong his career in Europe instead, returning to Benfica two years ago. His contract with the Portuguese side ends this summer and the winger may take the opportunity to finish his career with Rosario.

Di Maria came through the Rosario youth academy spent two years in the first team before Benfica snapped him up in 2007. A successful spell in Europe followed, as he went on to shine for Real Madrid, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain before signing on for a second spell in the Primeira Liga. At 37, his career is winding down and Rosario are going all out to lure him home.

Rosario head coach Ariel Holan confirmed the desire to add the World Cup winner to his squad, telling : "Any coach would love to have a footballer of his quality, but these are very personal decisions. This is already a seductive institution, and now it's organised and growing in many ways that aren't visible and are also important. The club is doing everything possible to have him back."
