Liverpool fans on Twitter were far from happy as the U23 side were defeated 7-0 in their Premier League International Cup opener against Villarreal’s U23s.
Manager Neil Critchley was unable to select his usual side thanks to a number of different reasons, and the young Reds selected struggled against their experienced opponents.
Regulars Bobby Adekanye, Nat Phillips and captain Matty Virtue were all ruled out through injury, while Adam Lewis, Neco Williams and Rafael Camacho had only recently returned from international duty.
Critchley made eight changes to his starting line-up, giving three players their full U23 debut and the Reds were 3-0 down within 15 minutes.
After going into the break 4-0 down, Liverpool conceded three more in the second-half as they were embarrassed by the Spanish visitors. Fans of the club on Twitter weren’t happy with the result, with many worried about the crop of young players at the club, despite the best talent being either unavailable for this game or out on loan.
