Leighton Baines will see his contract with Everton expire at the end of the season, and Aston Villa should make a January swoop for the left-back.
What’s the word, then?
Everton boss Marco Silva recently told the Liverpool Echo that he was thinking about a potential new midfield role for Baines.
However, there is no getting away from the fact that the 34-year-old has not played a single Premier League minute for Everton since September 1.
Baines’ contract at Goodison Park will expire at the end of this season, and it does appear that he will move on having lost his left-back position to the in-form Lucas Digne.
Baines has only just turned 34, and it is reasonable to think that he still has at least 18 months left of football at a good level.
Villa are not exactly well-stocked in the full-back positions, and the Championship outfit should make a January approach for Baines.
Would Villa appeal to Baines?
If Baines moved to Villa then he would link-up with former England teammate John Terry, who is now on the coaching staff at Villa Park having represented the team last season.
Villa are certainly an attractive proposition when it comes to their fan base and facilities, whilst they should be in the promotion mix in the Championship this season.
Indeed, Dean Smith’s side are currently just three points off the playoff spots in the second tier, and have not lost in the league since the end of October.
Baines has made over 400 appearances for Everton since joining the club from Wigan Athletic in 2007.
It seems that his time with the Toffees is coming to an end though, and Villa must do all they can to bring the defender to Villa Park.
