Leeds beat Manchester United to a signing this week.
That’s a sentence many football fans probably haven’t read for about 20 years, but it’s finally happened as Leeds loaned in a striker.
Getting in ahead of one of the biggest teams in world football to a target would usually be a reason to get excited – the Red Devils are a financial powerhouse that are able to go for some of the game’s top talents – but the Old Trafford outfit’s interest in Jean-Kevin Augustin isn’t an indication of his talent.

Context is everything in this scenario, and if you’ve been paying attention to the strikers the Manchester club have been linked with you’d know that they’re not exactly of the highest calibre.
The Red Devils aren’t chasing the world superstars this month – they’ve been linked to the likes of Odion Ighalo, a 30-year-old who has spent the last three years in China, Islam Slimani, a man who has a record of eight goals in 39 Premier League appearances and a 35-year-old Carlos Tevez who hasn’t played top-flight European football since 2015.
If Augustin hadn’t been linked to Leeds, then the wider world of football would have had every right to laugh at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side for targeting a man who scored just once in 2019.
The striker may yet come good in the Championship for Leeds, but just because he was chased by one of the Premier League big boys doesn’t mean he’s going to be a success in Leeds.
He has no experience of English football and his solitary goal this season suggests he’s in poor form.
Supporters at Elland Road will have to wait in order to pass judgement on the Frenchman this term.
In other news, Andrea Radrizzani made his feelings very clear on one huge talking point.
