West Ham United could soon be forced into a decision on the future of manager David Moyes, with reports suggesting that Mauricio Pochettino is keen on taking over at the London Stadium.
Could Mauricio Pochettino take over at West Ham?
According to Football Insider, the former Southampton and Spurs boss is keen for a return to the Premier League and would be open to taking charge of the Hammers should Moyes be sacked.
The Times have suggested that a poor result against Nottingham Forest on Saturday could be the final straw for the 59-year-old Scotsman, with the Irons the only club in the bottom six who haven’t changed manager so far this season.
Moyes’ successes last season, which saw West Ham earn European football and reach the semi-finals of the Europa League, are perhaps the only reason why he has lasted this long, as another negative display last weekend saw them drop into the relegation places with a 2-0 defeat against Spurs.
The report from Football Insider claims that the West Ham board are aware of Pochettino’s interest in the job and given his reputation and previous work in the Premier League, they would surely be foolish to turn him down, regardless of this weekend’s result against Forest.
Is Pochettino a good replacement for David Moyes?
Pochettino first came to prominence in England with Southampton, having impressed with Espanol, and he would deliver an impressive 1.45 points per game for the Saints, helping establish talents such as Luke Shaw, James Ward-Prowse and Adam Lallana.
He then moved to Spurs and was unfortunate not to deliver a trophy with the north London club as they played cultivated a formidable playing style which favoured Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen in the attack, while he also lost out to Liverpool in the Champions League final.
Pundit Jamie O’Hara was full of praise for the 50-year-old as a result of his achievements with Spurs, labelling him “world-class” when speaking on talkSPORT.
A record of 2.15 points per game at Paris Saint-Germain was not enough to see him keep his job but it seems clear that the Argentine would bring with him an excellent record in England with the experience of getting the best out of top-quality players.
Therefore, West Ham should be flattered by Pochettino’s interest given their current predicament and it could prove to be another catalyst in Moyes losing his job at the London Stadium.
